An afternoon in Bari Italy
The first night’s sleep on Costa Fortuna was grand. Our mattress let you sink into it up to your ears. Almost like being in the womb again.
On Tuesday morning, we took the ship tour bus a few kilometers into Bari. After seeing the easy route in, we decided to walk back via Bari’s downtown and walled fortress.
Downtown Bari felt quite structured, almost Stalinistic with very similar block footprints and building facias. However, in getting away from the waterfront, about a half-dozen blocks in, a nice park opened up before us. Even better, buildings stopped being so same.
Our journey through the walled city were made more enjoyable by looking past the afternoon sweepers into their home beyond to see how slow paced and simply they lived. It’s good to know that rushing about isn’t the standard in Bari as it seems in Western Italy.
At Basilica di San Nicola, I was greatly impressed by the frescos and alcoves. However, my camera skills have failed me to share with you here. While I might not consider Bari, a destination, I’m glad to have passed through and seen a different side of Italy.
