There once was a healthy back

There once was a healthy back

There once was a healthy back
then it picked bulbs
fell out of a tree
got run over by a few cows
bucked bales
played rough
backpacked miles with 50 pounds plus
joined the military
ran, jumped and lifted all day
just to play rougher
and then
it’s over
and got lazy

Activity became a fat belly
after years
with some effort
okay a lot
palms touched the floor
and kung fu
and tai-chi
and cycling reigned

One day
the back said enough
of touching the floor
or feeling the legs
or being okay
the fun is no more

Oh, my achy, breaky back
and tingling nerves
and sore hip
and disliking to sit

To play
is to hurt
life is no fun
just sitting around

So really
truly
my life is
no pain
no gain
