I recently found myself placating others around Performance Management via Career Management for several weeks. Actually, a month plus in hindsight.
I had the big picture reasonably clear in my head, but I had become stumped upon some core implementation details. Though I was progressing on various related matters, getting central stuff done so we could get started with performance coaching wasn’t happening.
After the third, probably more like the fifth, ask from others to help out, I finally decided to walk them through what was intended during a scheduled meeting.
Guess what happened? Together we got a let us keep it short and straightforward (KISS) way forward.
It came about because in sharing with others, I stated things through their perspective of the situation, and by explaining it that way, I forced myself to consider alternative aspects of the problem.
Like magic, ideas flowed again.
Together, we figured out what was the quickest route ahead. And, while what we came up with wasn’t for the long-term, it’s good enough to get us started for iterating later.
So, talk things out with others and get KISSing.
